Fequently Asked Questions
What ages come?
The group is usually mid 20's to mid 40's, but we have had 9 year olds up to early 70's. A positive attitude is the key factor - age is relative.
I'm travelling solo!
Over 60% of Rothar Cycle Tour participants go as individuals, and either share with a member of the same sex in the hotels, or opt for the single supplement (?120 - 5 hotel nights) and have a hotel room to yourself.
How fit should I be?
These trips should appeal to most people who enjoy the outdoors. On average 5 hours a day is spent in the saddle on the Eastern trips, 4 hours on the other tours. Either natural fitness, or 10 - 15 miles done 4 or 5 times on a borrowed bike before a trip, would add a lot to the enjoyment level.
A normal day?
It usually starts at about 10:00 am, and finishes between 16:00 and 18:30. All trips have at least a 1.5 hour scenic beach stop during each travel day. A detailed itinerary of the requested tour will be forwarded to you on receipt of deposit.
The weather?
Brittany is usually drier than Ireland with temperatures about 2 to 3 degrees higher. June 19C, July 20C, August 21C and September 19C.
Guide?
All groups are accompanied by Aidan Quinlan, on bike, for the tours as listed, but longer options are available. Ask about these if interested. The mainly back roads used in Brittany are of excellent quality with few potholes, so bike trouble is unlikely.
The bikes?
New each year, are 18 speed "hybrid" types with raised handlebars, very easy to ride and much lighter than mountain bikes. They can be used as a 6 speed. Each bike has a handlebar bag into which goes your camera, sun cream and swimsuit.
What size is the group?
Minimum group size is 8, maximum is 16. If a tour number does not reach 8 people, you will be notified well in advance and an alternative date ? same tour will be offered. If this is not acceptable, your deposit will be refunded in full.
Luggage?
Is carried throughout the tour. If you wish to take a day off, just join the minibus.
Other tours?
Late October 2004 it is proposed to run a week long fly/cycle tour to the magic island of Sicily. Further details in July.
